Sure, some definitely were in the hospitality sector, but people from a wide variety of job skills were able to get employment from these gains—including those in the construction and health care industries.

This marks four months in a row of job gains in New Orleans, something worth celebrating just as much as the city does Mardi Gras for sure!

Job Gains in New Orleans

In April, the Big Easy saw a good chunk of job growth when the city added 4,500 new jobs. The most awesome thing about this—besides the fact that 4,500 people got jobs, and that many of these people were even able to support families on their new salaries—is that they weren’t just from hospitality and tourism, like many would think. Sure, some definitely were in the hospitality sector, but people from a wide variety of job skills were able to get employment from these gains—including those in the construction and health care industries. This marks four months in a row of job gains in New Orleans, something worth celebrating just as much as the city does Mardi Gras for sure!

Manufacturing is a Pretty Accessible Career Choice

My husband used to work in manufacturing, and while he was laid off, there seem to be many other manufacturing jobs available. Unfortunately most of them are a commute of at least an hour or longer away from us, making the trip there and back too much for what the jobs are worth. Still, these are the jobs that call back most often, and it’s no wonder why. They train you as soon as you start (usually paid training), don’t expect a lot of experience, offer decent pay for a basic skill set, and even have flexible shifts; most manufacturing plants that I know of have an early day, afternoon, and evening shift.

Government Job Losses are Mostly at the Community Level

Among the job losses we’ve been seeing over the past few years, government jobs seem to be taking one of the hardest hits—though not where they should be, perhaps. Rather than cutting politician pay, aides, and other red tape jobs, it’s the ones in our communities that seem to be cut the most. Take South Carolina, for example. The state has lost nearly 15,000 education jobs within the past year, but most were in the education sector. Perhaps if more cuts were made on wasteful spending and politician expenditures, we could lower the slowly dropping unemployment rates much more quickly—and prevent many jobs from being cut in the first place.

Job Growth in Ohio

Northeast Ohio has seen job growth for four full quarters in a row now, with the area’s 16 counties seeing an increase of around 40,000 jobs within the last year. Since the recession started really hitting the country in 2007, this was the first time that the job growth actually carried over into the next year in Ohio as well. Most of the job increases in the area have been attributed to the manufacturing sector. In terms of national growth, Ohio is subsequently showing a better recovery than the average. Unemployment also dropped faster than the national average, with a 2% decrease during this time period.

Need a Job in Chicago?

One of the largest employment growth opportunities in Chicago is that of the adult caregiver. The elderly population continues to increase, with over 1.5 million retirees in the city by 2020. Most elderly people in the Chicago area are opting to remain there when they retire, often moving to smaller, more manageable homes. Many elderly people need assistance in various ways—whether with self-help skills, home care help, or even simply someone to grocery shop for or visit with them.
